The woman behind the work

My name is Antonia Morton, and I’m a well-educated, middle-aged Englishwoman with a keen literary sensibility. My taste in hats may be frivolous, but my talent for improving your written material certainly isn’t.

Eagle Eye Editing is the one-woman communications consulting company I’ve run since 1998. As a professional editor, freelance journalist, full-time language obsessive, marketing buff, lifelong reader, literature graduate, occasional teacher, and web enthusiast, I’ve got what it takes to tidy up your academic, literary, online, popular, government or promotional writing.

Professional Skills

I’ve spent the last decade handling responsibilities such as:

cleaning up copy for publication
creating content for a variety of media and clients
collating text from several contributors to provide a “common look and feel”
working with subject experts to research written material
consulting with small businesses on marketing strategies
forging relationships with clients
liaising with other industry professionals
managing multiple projects
meeting tight deadlines

In addition, I also possess:

a fair fluency in French and German
a college diploma in Carpentry and Construction
a working knowledge of all the usual computer programs and technology
an obsessive-compulsive nature that dovetails perfectly with my chosen profession (see More About Me)

Editing Focus

My forte is “plain language”: clear, precise, informal prose that allows readers to appreciate your message with a minimum of mental effort. My goal is always to make your writing as reader-friendly as possible.

When I work on your copy, I’m fast and neat at correcting not just spelling errors and improper grammar, but also awkward sentence structure, redundancy, or unclear meaning. I work hard to untangle convoluted sentences, and to rewrite jargon into standard English. When your material leaves my hands, it boasts straightforward organization and language, together with impeccable style and punctuation.

Qualifications

Educated in England, Scotland and Switzerland; completed high school in Toronto
Studied Advertising and Marketing at Algonquin College, Ottawa
Earned an Honours BA in English Literature, Carleton University (1979-83)
Worked at the Kingston Whig-Standard as a writer and editor (1991-92)
Earned a Bachelor of Journalism from Ryerson University (1995-97)

Professional Affiliation

As a member of the Editors’ Association of Canada, I regularly attend the association’s professional development courses and annual conferences. I also follow all its guidelines, processes and fee scales.
